PAID-RANKING WARNING

Many websites that promise to identify the “Best Gold IRA Company” or “Top Gold IRA Company” earn money when readers click a link, request an information kit, call a tracked telephone number, submit their contact information, open an account, or complete a precious-metals purchase.

These pages often look like independent financial research. In reality, many operate as paid customer-acquisition systems designed to deliver retirement investors to the dealers financing them.

Search Google for the Best Gold IRA Company and you will find dozens of confident answers.

Different websites. Different authors. Different scoring systems. Different badges, stars, awards, methodologies, and claims of expertise.

Yet the same small circle of dealers repeatedly appears near the top.

A senior reading these pages may reasonably believe the company ranked first:

  • Offers the lowest precious-metals prices
  • Provides the most gold for the investor’s money
  • Has the smallest purchase-to-resale difference
  • Has the cleanest government and complaint record
  • Was compared with every important competitor
  • Won first place through independent non compensated research

Frequently, the ranking proves none of those things.

It may not compare one written precious-metals quote. It may not identify the coins investors are actually encouraged to purchase. It may not calculate the dealer’s markup. It may not obtain a resale bid. It may not measure how many ounces the investor receives.

The website may simply recommend the companies willing to pay it.

The Ranking Is Not Next to the Advertisement The Ranking Is the Advertisement

The paid-ranking system has become effective because it does not look like an advertisement.

It looks like retirement journalism.

The page may use phrases such as:

  • “Best overall”
  • “Our number-one choice”
  • “Editor’s pick”
  • “Most trusted”
  • “Best for seniors”
  • “Our experts recommend”
  • “Top-rated Gold IRA company”
  • “We researched the companies so you don’t have to”

The reader sees an independent recommendation.

The affiliate publisher sees a sales lead.

The Gold IRA dealer sees a prospective retirement account.

When the reader clicks, calls, submits a form, requests a free guide, opens an account, or completes a purchase, the publisher may be paid.

The disclosure may appear somewhere on the page. But the disclosure is not the central problem.

The Scam Is the Disguise

The problem is a commercial sales funnel presented in the language and appearance of independent retirement guidance.

We Reviewed 28 “Best Gold IRA Company” Pages

Certified Gold Exchange examined 28 current and historical pages ranking Gold IRA companies. We reviewed the ranking language, author biographies, disclosure text, fee tables, outbound-link parameters, telephone numbers, contact forms, promotions, scoring systems, and affiliate recruitment pages associated with the industry.

The investigation included:

  • Standalone Gold IRA review websites
  • Personal-finance publications
  • Advertorials on unrelated or repurposed domains
  • Commercial press releases syndicated through recognizable financial-news platforms
  • Dealer and affiliate recruitment pages describing how marketers are compensated
  • Historical rankings naming companies that later failed

The affiliate recruitment pages were particularly revealing.

Review pages are written for retirement investors. Recruitment pages are written for marketers.

The two describe the same business, but only one has a reason to explain how the money works.

What the FTC Says About Paid Rankings

The Federal Trade Commission directly addresses websites that accept money in return for higher positions on a ranked list.

The FTC’s example describes a review website that ranks products from most recommended to least recommended. Manufacturers pay for higher positions. The FTC states that these paid-for rankings are deceptive regardless of whether the website expressly claims to be objective or independent.

The FTC then makes an even more important point:

A General Affiliate Disclosure Does Not Fix a Ranking Determined by Payment

A statement that the publisher receives compensation is inadequate when that compensation determines the products’ relative rankings.

In other words, this sentence does not cure a purchased first-place position:

“We may receive compensation from some of the companies featured on this page.”

That sentence does not tell the reader:

  • Which dealers pay the publisher
  • Which dealers do not
  • Whether nonpaying dealers were excluded
  • Whether payment affects eligibility
  • Whether payment affects placement
  • Whether different dealers pay different amounts
  • Whether payment is triggered by a click, lead, funded account, or completed sale
  • Whether certain precious-metals products generate larger commissions
  • Whether the reviewer obtained a real purchase quote
  • Whether the reviewer ever purchased anything from the dealer

The FTC also says that when advertising is directed at older consumers, the effectiveness of the disclosure must be judged from the perspective of that older audience.

A disclosure is not clear merely because a lawyer, affiliate marketer, or web designer knows where to find it.

Regal Assets Created the Modern Gold IRA Affiliate Blueprint

former best gold ira companies go bankrupt
former best gold ira companies go bankrupt

Regal Assets did not invent internet affiliate marketing.

It did, however, pioneer and industrialize the modern Gold IRA affiliate promotion—the model that placed marketers between retirement investors and precious-metals dealers and paid those marketers for producing leads and transactions.

A 2014 federal court record described Regal’s online promotion and its Affiliate Program Agreement. Under that agreement, affiliates received commissions for generating leads and facilitating transactions for Regal.

That was the blueprint:

  1. Publish content about retirement fears, inflation, government debt, banking risk, or currency decline.
  2. Create a page identifying the “Best Gold IRA Company.”
  3. Rank the participating high paying dealer first.
  4. Offer a free Gold IRA guide.
  5. Collect the reader’s name, telephone number, and email address.
  6. Send the prospect into a telephone sales process.
  7. Earn money when the lead converts into sales.
  8. The commission was not typically earned on common bullion items, rather the prospect had to buy higher markup premium or exclusive coins.

Regal’s program was publicly promoted in 2014 as a particularly lucrative Gold IRA affiliate opportunity. Its expanding online network helped make affiliate rankings one of the industry’s primary customer-acquisition methods.

Marketers from across the globe (including India and Russia) started to compete for a piece of US retirement accounts. One affiliate recruiting website stated that marketers could warm over a million dollars per month.

Regal Was Not Merely Included on the Lists—It Was the Winner

In 2018, Regal was named International Bullion Dealer of the Year and placed among the top three dealers in the United States in a large online dealer vote. The accompanying description called Regal a major international player and praised its expansion.

A 2021 ranking page claimed its research came from independent and authoritative sources. That page:

  • Ranked Regal Assets number one
  • Gave it five stars
  • Awarded it 95% for quality
  • Awarded it 95% for pricing and fees
  • Described it as the industry’s leading Gold IRA company
  • Called Regal the reader’s “ultimate choice”

The page emphasized Regal’s ratings, low administrative fees, delivery promise, buyback program, media exposure, and free Gold IRA kit.

Regal appeared to be exactly what a frightened retirement investor wanted:

Recognized. Highly rated. Widely recommended. Media-approved. Experienced. International. Number one.

Then the story ended very differently.

What Happened to Regal Assets?

In September 2023, the CFTC and the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation filed a civil enforcement action alleging that Regal Assets, its owner, and its former president misappropriated more than $21 million from over 120 customers.

The government said most of the money came from tax-deferred retirement accounts. The complaint alleged that customer money intended for precious-metals purchases was instead used for business expenses, personal compensation, loans, other ventures, and Ponzi-like payments to earlier customers.

In October 2024, a federal court entered default judgments requiring more than $21.9 million in restitution and more than $27.3 million in civil monetary penalties. The court also imposed permanent bans.

The company once presented as the number-one Gold IRA choice ended with approximately $49 million in court-ordered restitution and penalties.

Where were the affiliate ranking systems that had assured seniors Regal was the best?

They had moved on.

The “Best Gold IRA Company” List Has No Memory

A legitimate research organization should examine its failures.

When a company it strongly recommended collapses, the publisher should prominently tell readers:

  • Why the earlier evaluation failed
  • Which warning signs were missed
  • Whether the publisher was compensated
  • How much money the relationship generated
  • Whether the ranking methodology changed
  • Whether affected readers were notified
  • Whether the publisher accepts any responsibility for the recommendation

That is generally not how the affiliate-ranking system operates.

The failed company disappears.

Its badge, telephone number, and free-investor-kit button are removed.

Another paying dealer becomes “Best Overall.”

The website continues collecting leads.

The List Is Not Designed to Remember Yesterday’s Recommendation It Is Designed to Monetize Today’s Visitor

Regal was not an isolated example.

Oxford Gold Group: “Best for Beginners” Until It Vanished

Oxford Gold Group appeared on numerous prominent Gold IRA lists.

A 2023 ranking distributed through Nasdaq described Oxford as reliable, trustworthy, highly rated, educational, and one of the top Gold IRA companies available.

Another ranking gave Oxford a score of 4.8 out of 5, called it “Best for Diversified Portfolios,” and praised its reputation, competitive prices, security, customer service, and reliability.

A January 2024 Business Insider article selected Oxford as the Best Gold IRA Company for Beginners and highlighted its educational materials, repurchase program, rollover assistance, and storage arrangements. The article disclosed that the publisher could receive commissions from partners.

To a senior, these repeated recommendations created the appearance of independent confirmation.

Then, in July 2024, an ABC7 investigation reported that the company had vanished, customers feared their retirement savings were gone, complaints were accumulating, and the BBB had revoked its accreditation.

On August 28, 2024, more than 40 creditors filed an involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition against Oxford Gold Group. An interim trustee was appointed in September, and an order for relief was entered in October.

Oxford had been called:

  • Best for beginners
  • Best for diversified portfolios
  • Reliable
  • Secure
  • Competitive
  • Trustworthy
  • One of the best Gold IRA companies

After the collapse, the search results did not stop recommending Gold IRA companies.

They simply presented new winners.

Rosland Capital: A “Best” Company Eight Days Before Bankruptcy

The speed of the Rosland Capital example is even more revealing.

On June 24, 2026, CBS News updated an article identifying five of the best Gold IRA companies available “right now.” The page disclosed that commissions could be earned from links.

Rosland Capital was selected as:

“Best for Premium Gold and Collector-Grade Products”

The article said Rosland could be a strong match for knowledgeable investors interested in premium and high-end tangible assets.

Eight days later, on July 2, 2026, Rosland Capital filed a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy case in the Central District of California.

The company’s first-day declaration stated that a restructuring professional had been retained to oversee the liquidation of Rosland’s business and assets.

A company presented as one of the best Gold IRA choices “right now” was in bankruptcy eight days later.

Within the same July ranking cycle, the online machinery was already presenting complete new slates of “Best Overall,” “Best for Low Fees,” “Best for Customer Satisfaction,” “Best for Education,” and other replacement winners. Paid partner sections continued promoting bonuses, waived expenses, celebrity endorsements, free silver, and tracked calls to action.

The rankings did not pause.

They did not warn every reader who had seen the prior recommendation.

They did not place a large correction over every old headline.

They replaced the name and continued.

Three Former “Best” Gold IRA Companies

Formerly promoted companyWhat ranking pages told investorsWhat followed
Regal AssetsNumber one, five stars, “leading” company and “ultimate choice”Federal default judgments requiring approximately $49 million in restitution and civil penalties
Oxford Gold GroupBest for beginners, best for diversified portfolios, reliable and secureCompany disappeared from ordinary operations, followed by an involuntary Chapter 7 case filed by more than 40 creditors
Rosland CapitalOne of the five best companies “right now”; best for premium and collector-grade productsVoluntary Chapter 11 filing eight days after the article’s June 24 update, with a court declaration describing a liquidation process

These were not obscure dealers that no reviewer had examined.

They had ratings, awards, positive reviews, recognizable advertising, media exposure, years in business, educational materials, celebrity associations, buyback language, professional websites, and favorable placements on “Best Gold IRA Company” pages.

Everything affiliate lists tell investors to trust was present.

A Current “Best” Company With a Government Record the Lists Minimize

We also confirmed that a currently operating dealer continues to appear on multiple 2026 ranking pages, including prominent top-five placements and categories such as “Best for Beginners” or similar experience-based distinctions.

We are deliberately not naming the dealer on this page.

The purpose is not to target one operating company while allowing the paid-ranking system to pretend the problem begins and ends there. Readers can examine the linked government records and draw their own conclusions.

The public record includes:

  • A $6 million New York settlement resolving a lawsuit that alleged undisclosed commissions of up to 33%, including sales to older residents seeking to protect retirement savings.
  • A $2.75 million Los Angeles settlement resolving allegations involving unfair and deceptive business practices and large fees allegedly charged under false pretenses.
  • A $5.5 million investor recovery through a bankruptcy plan following a multistate regulatory investigation into deceptive precious-metals activities and misleading marketing.
  • A Chapter 11 filing following settlements totaling $8.75 million with New York and Los Angeles authorities.

Those government actions are not rumors, anonymous complaints, or social-media allegations.

They are public records.

Yet the dealer continues to appear on current “Top Gold IRA Company” pages.

That fact exposes a fundamental weakness in the ranking model:

The Rankings Often Measure Marketability Better Than Investor Protection

A recognizable name, large review count, long operating history, extensive advertising budget, polished educational materials, affiliate program, and strong sales conversion can keep a dealer highly visible.

None of those facts tells an investor:

  • What markup will be charged
  • Which coins the salesperson will recommend
  • How many ounces the investor will receive
  • What those products could be resold for
  • Whether an independent dealer can verify the price
  • Whether the company’s past conduct should disqualify it from being called “best”

Why Paid Rankings Keep Producing the Same Winners

A truly independent investigation could evaluate hundreds of precious-metals dealers.

The paid-ranking model usually begins with a much smaller commercial universe:

The Companies Willing to Pay for Customers

The publisher may be compensated for:

  • A click
  • A telephone call
  • A completed contact form
  • A qualified lead
  • An opened account
  • A funded account
  • A completed transaction
  • A percentage of qualifying sales
  • Future transactions made by the referred customer

The affiliate therefore has little economic reason to send a retirement investor to a dealer that does not participate in the compensation system.

A company that offers lower prices but refuses affiliate marketing can become invisible.

A company that supports large customer-acquisition payments can appear everywhere.

The resulting list does not answer:

“Which Gold IRA company offers the investor the best value?”

It answers:

“Which participating dealer should receive this monetized lead?”

The Commission May Follow the Premium Coin

The most important discovery in our 28-page investigation concerned the products that generated affiliate revenue.

Several published affiliate recruitment programs tied sales commissions specifically to premium-coin or premium-product purchases. In some programs, ordinary bullion purchases paid standard affiliates less or nothing.

That single fact reorganizes the entire ranking industry.

The Affiliate May Make More Money When the Investor Receives Less Gold

Consider the conflict:

  • Widely recognized bullion usually has a price that can be compared among many dealers.
  • Proprietary, exclusive, proof, limited-production, specially labeled, or unfamiliar coins are harder to compare.
  • Harder-to-compare products can support larger markups.
  • Larger markups provide more revenue from which dealers can pay salespeople, advertisers, endorsers, promotions, and affiliates.

The ranking publisher may praise a dealer’s:

  • Educational approach
  • Concierge service
  • Dedicated specialist
  • Exclusive products
  • Personalized portfolio
  • Premium selection
  • Rare-coin expertise
  • White-glove rollover assistance

Those descriptions may sound reassuring.

But the investor needs to ask what happens at the end of that educational sales process:

How Many Ounces Will I Receive—and What Could I Sell Them for Today?

The Fee Misdirection Common On Best Gold IRA Company Review Sites.

Nearly every Gold IRA ranking discusses fees.

The pages commonly compare:

  • A $50 setup charge
  • A $30 wire charge
  • A $100 storage charge
  • A $100 to $250 annual custodian charge
  • A first-year fee waiver

Those are real costs. Investors should understand them.

They are often not the largest cost.

A $250 annual custodial expense is visible and easy to place in a comparison table.

A $30,000 markup on $100,000 worth of metal may be embedded in the product price and never labeled as a “fee.”

The ranking teaches the senior to investigate the smaller number while ignoring the number capable of causing the greatest damage.

A Dealer Can Waive $250 and Overcharge $30,000

A page that carefully compares annual storage charges but does not compare the actual precious-metals prices is not meaningfully comparing Gold IRA costs.

It is comparing custodians while appearing to compare dealers.

“Free Gold” and “Free Silver” Are Paid for by the Customer

Current ranking pages advertise offers such as:

  • Up to $25,000 in free silver
  • Up to $20,000 in bonus gold
  • Years of free storage
  • Waived setup charges
  • Account credits
  • Free insured shipping
  • Complimentary IRA assistance

These offers appear inside sections identifying dealers as paid partners.

No for-profit dealer can distribute thousands of dollars in precious metals without generating enough revenue elsewhere in the transaction to pay for them.

The investor should never ask only:

“How much free silver am I receiving?”

The correct question is:

“How many total ounces will I receive after the promotion, and how many ounces would another dealer provide for the same amount without the promotion?”

A dealer could give an investor $10,000 of “free” silver while charging substantially more than another company for the remaining products.

The bonus has no value if the complete transaction leaves the investor with less metal.

What “Best Gold IRA Company” Lists Usually Fail to Rank

A meaningful Gold IRA comparison should measure the transaction—not merely the marketing surrounding it.

1. The Exact Products

The written proposal should identify:

  • Mint or manufacturer
  • Exact coin or bar
  • Weight
  • Purity
  • Year, when relevant
  • Quantity
  • Price per item
  • Total price

“Gold and silver” is not an adequate product description.

2. The Actual Markup

The investor should know:

  • Current spot value
  • Recognizable wholesale or market value
  • Dealer selling price
  • Dollar markup
  • Percentage markup

Annual storage expenses should not be presented as complete Gold IRA pricing.

3. The Immediate Resale Value

Before purchasing, ask the selling dealer:

“What would you pay today to repurchase these exact products if the metal price were unchanged?”

Then request bids from several independent dealers.

The purchase-to-resale difference is the amount the investment must recover before the investor reaches break-even.

4. The Number of Ounces

For the same amount of retirement money:

  • How many gold ounces does Dealer A provide?
  • How many does Dealer B provide?
  • Are the products equally recognizable?
  • Can the prices be verified independently?
  • Can the products be readily resold?

A website cannot credibly determine the Best Gold IRA Company without determining how much metal the investor receives.

5. Companies That Refuse to Pay Affiliates

A list limited to paying partners is not a survey of the industry.

It is a menu of commercial relationships.

The publisher should disclose:

  • Every dealer considered
  • Every dealer excluded
  • Which dealers pay
  • Which dealers do not
  • Whether a nonpaying company can rank first
  • Whether payment affects eligibility or placement

6. The Reviewer’s Actual Transaction Experience

Reading dealer websites is not transaction testing.

Calling a customer-service number is not transaction testing.

Requesting a free guide is not transaction testing.

A serious comparison requires written, time-stamped quotations for specific products and current resale bids for those same products.

Without that evidence, the publisher is primarily comparing marketing materials.

Seven Questions to Ask the Ranking Website

Before relying on a “Top Gold IRA Company” list, ask its publisher:

Which ranked dealers pay you?

Do not accept “some companies may compensate us.”

Request the names.

What causes you to be paid?

Ask whether compensation is triggered by a click, call, form, qualified lead, opened account, funded account, sale, or future purchase.

Do different dealers pay different amounts?

A publisher may have a larger incentive to promote the company offering the largest return.

Does compensation affect inclusion or position?

Ask whether a company that pays nothing can be ranked number one.

Does the product affect the commission?

Ask whether the affiliate earns the same amount when an investor purchases ordinary bullion instead of premium or proprietary coins.

Did the reviewer obtain written purchase and resale quotes?

Request the exact products, quantities, prices, spot price, date, time, and independent resale bids.

How many ounces would each company provide?

A publisher that cannot answer has not determined which company offers the most gold for the investor’s money.

How to Find the Best Gold IRA Company Without Trusting a Paid List

Start by eliminating companies that pay affiliate marketers to rank or recommend them.

Gold IRA affiliate commissions can consume several percentage points of a transaction—money that ultimately has to come from the customers those affiliates deliver. If your goal is to pay less and receive more ounces, there is no reason to fund an affiliate commission simply to become a sales lead.

Do not contact the ranking website, request its “free” guide, submit your telephone number, or ask its advertisers for explanations. Seniors should not engage with affiliate marketers, suspected scammers, romance scammers, or anyone using deception to gain their trust.

Disengage. Close the page. Do not answer follow-up calls.

Avoid the Influence Business Model

Be especially cautious with companies that:

  • Pay celebrities for endorsements
  • Advertise “free” gold or silver
  • Pay affiliate marketers to name them the Best Gold IRA Company
  • Offer to pay your custodian or storage fees
  • Promote unfamiliar, exclusive, proprietary, proof, or specially labeled coins
  • Recommend products priced 20% to 30% or more above the value of their metal

These incentives and promotions are not free. Their cost must be recovered somewhere in the transaction.

Compare Recognized One-Ounce Bullion

A precious-metals dealer becomes much easier to evaluate when you insist on widely recognized, price-checkable products such as:

  • One-ounce American Gold Eagles
  • One-ounce Canadian Gold Maple Leafs
  • American Silver Eagles
  • Canadian Silver Maple Leafs
  • Recognized qualifying bullion bars

Tell the dealer exactly what you want and compare the same products with several companies at approximately the same time.

Do not allow the conversation to be redirected toward unfamiliar coins simply because they come from a recognized mint. A respected mint can produce both ordinary bullion and higher-priced specialty products. What matters is the exact product, the current metal value, the dealer’s price, and the percentage above spot.

When an unfamiliar product carries a premium of 20% or more, stop and compare it with the amount of recognized bullion you could receive for the same money.

Do Not Rely on an A+ BBB Rating Only

An A+ BBB rating does not establish that a dealer offers fair prices or that customer funds and orders are safe.

Rosland Capital reportedly maintained an A+ rating days before filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It also had more than 170 complaints, including complaints alleging several month delays in receiving metals or sales proceeds.

\Investors lost close to 50 million from the Rosland Capital  bankruptcy and that does not include the millions they overpaid for products over the years.

The letter grade should never replace reading the actual complaint record.

Read Every Complaint

Look for companies with no complaints—or only one or two—and read every complaint carefully.

Pay particular attention to reports involving:

  • Undelivered metals
  • Delayed liquidation proceeds
  • Unauthorized product substitutions
  • Premium or collectible coins
  • Large differences between purchase and resale prices
  • Difficulty obtaining written prices
  • Pressure to act immediately
  • Representatives who stop responding after funds are transferred

When complaints show a pattern of high-premium coin sales, delayed delivery, missing proceeds, or unauthorized substitutions, keep looking.

The safest Gold IRA company is not the company with the most persuasive ranking. It is the company willing to provide recognized products, written prices, competitive ounces, and an immediate resale quote before receiving your retirement money.

Search the Company’s Complete History

Search:

  • Company name plus “lawsuit”
  • Company name plus “attorney general”
  • Company name plus “CFTC”
  • Company name plus “SEC”
  • Company name plus “bankruptcy”
  • Company name plus “undelivered metals”
  • Company name plus “complaints”
  • Founder’s name plus the same terms

Do not limit the search to the first page of results.

Demand the Product List Before Transferring Money

Obtain a written proposal showing every product, quantity, weight, purity, price, total metal value, and markup before funding the account.

Insist on Price-Checkable Products

Widely recognized products such as one-ounce American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, and qualifying bullion bars can be quoted by numerous independent dealers.

That does not make them impossible to overprice.

It makes excessive pricing much easier to detect.

Reject Unauthorized Substitutions

When a dealer agrees to provide Eagles, Maples, or recognized bars and later attempts to substitute premium or exclusive products, stop the transaction.

State in writing:

“I do not authorize any purchase, sale, exchange, substitution, trade, or transaction without my separate written approval.”

Send the instruction to the IRA custodian as well as the dealer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are “Best Gold IRA Company” rankings paid advertisements?

Many are supported by affiliate commissions, lead-generation payments, advertising arrangements, tracked calls, funded-account payments, or sales commissions. The commercial relationship may be disclosed, but the page can still appear to readers as independent financial research.

CGE recommends avoiding dealings with companies recommended by paid affiliates and to focus on American Eagles,  Canadian Maple Leafs or bars only.

The critical questions are whether payment affects which companies qualify, where they appear, and what products generate the affiliate’s compensation.

Who pays Gold IRA review websites?

Participating Gold IRA dealers or marketing networks generally fund the relationship. Payment may be triggered by a lead, telephone call, contact form, opened account, funded account, completed sale, or qualifying product purchase.

The investor indirectly supports the marketing expense through the revenue generated by customer transactions.

Why Do the Same Gold IRA Companies Appear on So Many “Best Dealer” Lists?

Because many of those websites are paid affiliates promoting the same small group of Gold IRA dealers.

A dealer with a large affiliate network can appear across dozens of unrelated-looking websites, each claiming to have independently identified it as a top choice. In reality, the publishers may be earning money when readers click, call, submit their information, open an account, or complete a transaction.

These repeated rankings should not be trusted as independent recommendations. What appears to be widespread agreement is often the reach of the same paid affiliate program.

Affiliate recommended gold IRA companies have proven in the past to sell some of the highest priced coins in the industry.

Can I trust Gold IRA reviews?

Use reviews to identify questions and recurring experiences, not as proof of fair pricing.

A thousand positive reviews do not tell you the dealer’s markup, how many ounces the investor received, or what another dealer would pay for the products.

What happened to Regal Assets?

Regal Assets pioneered the modern Gold IRA affiliate model and was repeatedly promoted as a top or number-one company. Federal regulators later brought a civil action concerning more than $21 million in misappropriated customer funds, primarily connected to retirement accounts. In 2024, a federal court entered default judgments requiring approximately $49 million in restitution and penalties.

What happened to the Oxford Gold Group?

Oxford was promoted as a top Gold IRA company, including “Best for Beginners” and “Best for Diversified Portfolios.” In 2024, customers reported being unable to obtain their metals or money, and more than 40 creditors subsequently filed an involuntary Chapter 7 petition against the company.

Is Rosland Capital still in business?

Rosland Capital filed a voluntary Chapter 11 case on July 2, 2026. Its first-day court declaration described a process intended to liquidate the company’s business and assets. A CBS article had named Rosland one of the best Gold IRA companies eight days earlier.

Why do Gold IRA rankings focus on annual fees?

Setup, custody, and storage charges are easy to display in a comparison table. The larger potential cost—the precious-metals markup—is embedded in the product price and requires an actual written quote to calculate.

A ranking that compares annual expenses without comparing product prices may direct investors toward the least consequential cost.

Are free-gold and free-silver promotions really free?

The promotion must be funded by revenue from the complete transaction. Investors should compare the total ounces received, the total metal value, and the immediate resale value—not the advertised bonus by itself. Remember what your parents told you about a free lunch.

How Can I Tell Whether a Gold IRA Company Is Overcharging Me?

Start with the current spot price of gold and calculate how much the dealer is charging above the metal’s value.

A price more than 10% above spot often indicates that you are being offered premium, exclusive, proof, specially labeled, or unfamiliar coins that may be difficult to compare with other dealers. Before proceeding, ask for the exact product, weight, quantity, total price, percentage above spot, and immediate resale value in writing.

Contact Certified Gold Exchange to learn about our Price Match Plus Guarantee on recognized American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, and qualifying bullion bars.

What Products Are Easiest to Price-Check in a Gold IRA?

Widely recognized products such as American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, and qualifying bullion bars are generally much easier to compare across multiple dealers than proprietary, exclusive, specially labeled, proof, limited-production, or unfamiliar coins.

The easier a product is to price-check, the harder it is for a single dealer to control the price, exaggerate its value, or conceal an excessive markup.

What Is the Most Important Question to Ask a Gold IRA Company?

Do not begin by asking the salesperson what they recommend.

Many Gold IRA companies employ commissioned telemarketers whose income increases when customers purchase higher-markup products. Instead, state your instructions clearly:

“I want 100% of my precious-metals purchase in one-ounce American Gold Eagles or one-ounce Canadian Gold Maple Leafs.”

Then stop talking and listen.

A reputable Gold IRA company will respect your decision and provide a clear written quote for the products you selected.

A high-markup dealer may immediately give you reasons to avoid two of the world’s most recognized and easily price-checked gold coins. The representative may promote unfamiliar, exclusive, proof, limited-production, or specially labeled coins instead.

That response tells you more than any answer to a question could.

When a dealer refuses to quote the recognized bullion you requested—or pressures you to purchase a product you cannot independently price-check—end the conversation and keep looking.

How do I identify the real Top Gold IRA Company?

Look for firms with 2 or 3 decades in business and less than 3 BBB complaints. Additionally the best companies want you to own popular items with lower markups. Therefore they will always recommend you buy popular coins that are easy to price check.

Why Certified Gold Exchange Published This Investigation.

Certified Gold Exchange is a for-profit precious-metals dealer and has a commercial interest in earning your business.

We disclose that directly.

CGE does not pay affiliate publishers to rank us as the Best Gold IRA Company. We do not purchase celebrity endorsements or build our pricing around “free metal” promotions.

We primarily recommend widely recognized American Eagles, Canadian Maple Leafs, and qualifying bullion bars because investors can compare their prices with other dealers before committing their money.

Our position is straightforward:

The Best Gold IRA Company Is the Company Willing to Prove Its Price

Not through a purchased badge.

Not through a celebrity.

Not through an editor’s award.

Not through an information kit.

Not through a five-star graphic.

Not through a paid first-place ranking.

Through the exact products, the exact price, the total ounces, the written agreement, and what independent dealers would sell those same products for.

The Bottom Line

Regal Assets was once the number-one choice.

Oxford Gold Group was once the best choice for beginners.

Rosland Capital was one of the best companies “right now”—eight days before its bankruptcy filing.

Each company was replaced.

The ranking system survived because the ranking system was never financially dependent on being right for the investor.

It was dependent on delivering the next lead.

That is why seniors should never transfer retirement funds based on a “Best Gold IRA Company” list without first discovering:

  • Who pays the publisher
  • What causes the payment
  • Whether the product affects the commission
  • Which companies were excluded
  • What the exact metals cost
  • How many ounces will be delivered
  • What those metals could be sold for today

Before You Follow a Gold IRA Ranking, Follow the Money

I had an excellent experience dealing with Certified Gold Exchange with Patrick Collins!!! Pat was swift and precise on liquidating our precious metals account in a timely fashion and paid us well! I highly recommend Certified Gold Exchange, not only a fast turn around but helped us every step of the way including having our forms filled out, the whole transaction was hassle free and not only that but they bent over backwards and followed up on getting our liquidation funds into a fidelity IRA and guided us the whole step of the way!! Thank you Pat at Certified Gold Exchange!! AAA, two thumbs up, and five stars for Certified Gold Exchange!! 👍🏻👍🏻

Certified Gold Exchange walked me through the entire process of liquidating an inherited IRA. They were able to explain terms, outline all steps of the process, tell me exactly how to fill out forms. They worked with the difficult custodian and I didn't have to. Mary worked hard behind the scenes to get the process completed so smoothly.

I twice in the past year had the pleasure of using Certified Gold Exchange to help me to liquidate a portion of my precious metals assets. I had no idea just how easy this process would be. Lisa is a major asset for this company. I was meticulously walked through the process every step of the way. Updated and notified as to the progress constantly, right up to and even after receiving my funds. This is a top notch company I think everyone should be using for their metals needs and concerns. Bravo CGE and many thanks again to Lisa and staff!

Lifesavers! Got my gold unstuck and liquidated fast."I recently worked with Certified Gold Exchange to finally get my metals liquidated and my custodial account closed. My account was previously stuck with Rosland Capital, and I was getting nowhere with them. From start to finish, the team at Certified Gold Exchange was phenomenal. They are transparent, professional, and handled a complicated situation in just days. What took other brokers months to ignore, CGE handled quickly and without the hassle. I dealt with Emily and Patrick both of whom were incredibly responsive, clear, and truly helpful throughout. They made the whole transition feel stress-free. I highly recommend CGE if you are trying to resolve a frozen account or need to sell your metals safely."

I give them a five star just because they are nice people, but i tried selling them my Gold and they said they would only take it if it was over 15 ounces Lol... I probably have about one ounce and refuse to take it to the Pawnshop.

5-Star Review for Certified Gold Exchange I recently worked with Certified Gold Exchange (CGE) to close out my IRA account after Equity Trust dropped my previous broker, Rosland Capital. From start to finish, the entire process was smooth, professional, and remarkably fast. What took Rosland Capital months to accomplish, CGE handled in just days. They efficiently helped me liquidate my metals and close the account without any hassle. I initially dealt with Patrick, who was excellent—responsive, clear, and truly helpful throughout. He made the whole process feel straightforward and stress-free. I also want to give a special shout-out to Kat in the back office. She and the rest of the team worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to make everything happen so quickly. Patrick was right when he said the credit belongs to the whole team—they clearly work well together and put clients first. If you're looking for a trustworthy company to handle your precious metals IRA, whether buying, selling, or closing an account, I highly recommend Certified Gold Exchange. They delivered excellent service when I needed it most. Thank you, Patrick, Kat, and the entire CGE team!

I would never go anywhere to do anything with my investments without those two by my side. Thank You both so much for all the hard work you do and the patients you show me.

Patrick Collins…What can I say about Pat? What an exceptional human being and consummate professional, highly skilled and knowledgeable not to mention genuinely caring, personable and friendly. How very lucky I was to be transferred to Pat when I contacted CGE at a very sobering and low time of my life. I had just read a CGE article about the unscrupulous LA dealers. Twenty-one months earlier I had “invested” with one of them. I was devastated to have made such a foolish mistake but knew I had to urgently do something about it. I contacted CGE nearing the end of their work day. When I told Pat the hot water I was in, he was genuinely empathetic and immediately gave me hope for a solution, freely giving of his time and attention. I knew he was REAL!! Pat then “took my hand” (a guardian angel), reassured me (all the while positive and upbeat) that we could “untangle this mess” (his words). Although I was very despondent over what I had done, I had a glimmer of hope. Through this whole ordeal Pat never let go of me. He guided me at every step and was always there when I needed him with a friendly and upbeat sparkle. I can now say with HUUGE relief that we untangled that mess and I am now very confidently a CGE client for life. I can sleep soundly now knowing that I was treated fairly and respectfully with my precious metals IRA because I am dealing with a FIRST CLASS ACT- Pat Collins and Certified Gold Exchange. I will certainly recommend CGE to friends and family! And THANK YOU Pat!! From the bottom of my heart 🙂

It was my absolute honor to work with Patrick Collins when I needed to liquidate precious metals in an IRA that my siblings and I inherited. Patrick is very knowledgeable and extremely professional, and he provided the guidance and steady hand needed in a very quick time frame. Patrick has amazing inter-personal skills, and he made me feel like my business was the most important piece of business he is handling. Truly, Patrick could teach a master class on how to treat clients. Well done!

Working with Patrick Collins was the great total professional. And the company Certified Gold Exchange was fair. I will be sure to refer others to company for all of their precious metals transactions.
Several years ago, I purchased precious metals (within an IRA) through a highly recommended dealer (at the time). Recently, I learned that the dealer in question was found to be "less than reputable". I found myself asking, "under the circumstances, who can I trust to liquidate my account?" My first order of business was to find a dealer that I could trust. After considerable research, Certified Gold Exchange was at the top of my list. When I contacted CGE, I was introduced to Pat Collins. From our first discussion, Pat clearly understood the situation and developed a plan. Long story short, Pat earned my trust with his friendly demeanor, patience, and metals experience. I'll be calling CGE and Pat for my next transaction. Many thanks Pat!

Certified Gold Exchange's website really jumped out to me as I began researching precious metal IRA's. I found it to be incredibly comprehensive and informative, answering questions I did not even know to ask and alerting me to bad practices within the industry as well. So, I called and found the CGE team to be every bit as helpful as the website. They were responsive immediately and throughout the process of establishing an account and funding it. They were particularly helpful when dealing directly with my current custodian and getting funds rolled over. Pat and Mary have been courteous, personable, and very professional working with me and even helped with questions outside the immediate business at hand. I have already referred friends to CGE and will continue to do so.

In the mid-90's I was fortunate to locate CGE and John Halloran. I Found CGE on BBB. They had an A+ rating and received no complaints. I called them and John spent a lot of time with me. I had never purchased metal previously. The one thing that stuck with me was his advice that "you buy metal to hold, not to trade." I still have my original purchase plus some subsequent purchases. All is worth 2--3.5 times what I bought it for, including my TIRA. I feel secure that my portfolio is well diverse and now includes Gold & Silver. Thanks John.

Pat Collins, Melissa and the CGE team was incredibly professional in helping me setup my self directed IRA and purchasing the metals for the account. Pat was extremely knowledgable and was always responsive and willing to share his time and expertise to help me better understand each step in the process. I got regular updates from Pat to inform me of the status of each step in the account setup and in the metals purchase transaction. Looking forward to continuing to work with Pat and the CGE team in the future.

I recently liquidated a portion of my Precious Metals IRA (for the first time) and was concerned about the need to ship and the length of time my custodian, GoldStar Trust, was telling me it would take for the entire process. After a bit of research I found Certified Gold Exchange. What appealed to me in my research was the fact that CGE had accounts at many of the Depositories, including mine. That meant that there would be no shipping process (or delays). I had read stories of shipments disappearing in process and metal purchasers and custodians not being very helpful to the victims of the theft. In addition, CGE was very competitive in their pricing. From the beginning of contacting Patrick Collins the process was efficient and professional. Pat provided regular communication and helped me at every step. The length of time from start to finish was much quicker than I was expecting thanks to CGE. I want to thank Pat and his team at Certified Gold Exchange for a smooth and efficient transaction.

My experience with the Certified Gold Exchange and Mr. Collins was exemplary. Mr. Collins gave so freely of his time and expertise. He suggested outside readings in order for me to gain further knowledge of the world of precious metals. He helped me better understand my own situation and guided me towards making the best decision under my circumstances. When I sought advice, he gave it to me willingly. Throughout the process he was friendly, upbeat, considerate and kind. The huge irony in all this is that from very early on in the process of our multiple communications, he became aware that I could not even be a client! Still, he gave me his time and guidance. This is something I have rarely, if ever, experienced in my almost 59 years in this world. Additionally, when he saw he and his company could not help me, he provided alternative businesses that could. Again, when have you experienced this? I called one company prior to CGE and when the representative told me he couldn't help me, the phone call was over. Period, the end. Hence, when I do have an opportunity to sell or buy precious metals, there is no other business I would consider using. I highly recommend CGE for all of your precious metal needs. Best of luck.
