According to the U.S. Treasury Department’s Fiscal Data, the national debt is approaching $40 trillion as of May 2026, and inflation is affecting many retirement investors who are looking to protect their IRAs with gold. That’s why a self-directed individual retirement account holding physical gold and other precious metals has grown significantly in popularity over the past few years as more retirees seek alternatives to traditional paper-based holdings.
But the question still gets asked: are gold IRAs actually safe?
The honest answer is yes — gold IRAs are safe when you understand what you’re buying, who you’re buying from, and the market environment you’re buying into. But like any investment, a gold IRA carries risks, and those risks come down almost entirely to who you do business with and market timing.
We’ll explain how Gold and Silver IRA investments can be safe in a moment, but let’s start with the risks.
The Two Biggest Risks of a Gold IRA and How to Navigate Them Safely.
The biggest risk in opening a gold IRA isn’t holding gold itself. It’s choosing the wrong dealer.
Many gold IRA companies spend millions of dollars per year paying affiliate marketers to create the illusion that they’re the “best gold IRA company”. Most of them aren’t. In some cases, they’re among the worst in the industry. The dealers willing to spend the most to affiliate reviews are usually the ones who have to charge the most to make the math work — and that cost is passed on to you, in the form of inflated markups on the metals you buy. The “free metals” and “we’ll pay your account fees” promos, the “exclusive or premium coins” upsell — all of it gets baked back into what you end up paying. Nothing is actually free in the precious metals market just as in most areas of life.
And the pattern is well documented in federal and state enforcement actions.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission reported in a public consumer advisory that a single gold dealer charged nearly $150,000 in commissions and fees to a customer who rolled over a $300,000 retirement account. That’s roughly 50 percent of the customer’s nest egg – gone, for choosing the wrong dealer.
The New York Attorney General sued a major Los Angeles–based precious metals dealer in 2021, alleging the company had defrauded nearly 1,000 New Yorkers — many of them elderly — out of approximately $10 million through undisclosed commissions of up to 33% on more than $43 million in sales. According to the NY AG at the time, the case settled for $6 million in 2022, and the company was forced to overhaul its New York business practices.
A separate federal action filed by the CFTC and 29 state regulators charged a different gold IRA company with a $68 million fraud targeting elderly investors. As the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation reported when announcing the settlement, the firm charged markups between 51 to 71% on the precious metals it sold, while claiming they charged 23 to 42%. Roughly 97% of its sales to novice investors were steered into grossly overpriced silver coins.
You see the pattern. Choose the wrong precious metals dealer and your individual retirement account isn’t being invested. It’s being looted.
The above scenarios could all be avoided by contacting the Certified Gold Exchange and sticking with our core recommendation that you only buy American Eagles or Canadian Maple Leaf coinage.
The second biggest risk is when you buy. Gold is cyclical, the same as every other asset. If you bought near the September 2011 high when gold prices were around $1,920 per ounce, you watched the price slide to roughly $1,050 by late 2015. It took until 2020 for gold prices to recover.
The price of gold remains strong as of this writing in 2026, but corrections are normal — healthy, for that matter. There has never been a precious metals bull market that didn’t have pullbacks along the way, and the next one will be no different.
We’re not telling you this to scare you away from gold or other precious metals. We’re telling you because anyone promising a risk-free gold investment is being less than honest. Real safety comes from investing in gold in a bull market. Knowing what you own, what you paid for it relative to spot price, and what economic environment historically rewards you when holding physical gold.
With that out of the way, let’s look at why a gold IRA may in fact be a strong addition to your investment portfolio – when done right.
Are Gold IRAs a Safe Investment?
Gold and silver have functioned as money for more than four thousand years. They have survived the collapse of hundreds of fiat currencies. That track record alone is worth paying attention to. Below are the main reasons gold IRAs offer real safety and can play a meaningful role in a diversified investment strategy today.
Is a Gold IRA a Safe Haven?
Whether the trigger is a stock market crash, war, a recession, a depression, or plain old economic uncertainty, gold has historically been considered a safe haven by serious investors and even a hedge by leading governments.
Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates — one of the largest hedge funds in the world — has said it for years. “If you don’t own gold, you know neither history nor economics.” Dalio’s argument isn’t that gold prices go up forever. It’s that gold has helped people protect their assets during every major monetary system collapse on record, and ignoring that history is a choice.
Gold IRA as an Inflation Hedge
Typically, the more currency a government prints, the less value that currency holds. According to the Federal Reserve, their own balance sheet doubled from roughly $4.2 trillion at the start of 2020 to a peak above $8.9 trillion in 2022 — an expansion of more than $4.7 trillion in less than three years.
When that amount of currency enters the system, the prices of nearly everything — including gold — tends to rise.
For example, after the US ended dollar-gold convertibility in August 1971, the price of gold rose from its fixed level of about $35 per ounce to a January 1980 peak of around $850 — an increase of roughly 24 times. Inflation was running rampant during that decade as the dollar was no longer backed by gold. J.P. Morgan has set a 2026 gold price target above $4,400 per ounce, while Morgan Stanley has projected continued structural demand pushing prices toward $5,000, both citing currency debasement and central bank buying as primary drivers. That’s why gold IRAs are often viewed as an inflation hedge, particularly in periods like the current one when retirees feel the sting on their wallets.
Gold IRA Tax Advantages
Under IRS rules, gold and other precious metals are classified as collectibles. So if you hold physical metal outside of a retirement account, you may be on the hook for capital gains tax of up to 28 percent when you sell.
But if you purchase gold or other approved precious metals inside a self-directed individual retirement account, you don’t pay capital gains when you sell within the IRA. Gold IRAs carry the same tax advantages as traditional IRAs. Money is only taxed when you make a withdrawal from the IRA. Roth gold IRA withdrawals are entirely tax-free. But traditional and Roth IRAs are subject to a penalty if you withdraw from them prior to 59.5 years of age in most circumstances.
This tax advantage is one of the main reasons so many investors choose to invest precious metals through a self-directed IRA rather than buying it outright.
Gold IRAs Can Offer Portfolio Diversification
The vast majority of retirement accounts, anywhere from 95 to 97 percent, are not self-directed. Therefore, the assets they can hold are very limited. A traditional IRA or regular IRA is usually invested in stocks or bonds, or maybe mutual funds or ETFs.
A self-directed IRA allows you to invest in precious metals. That includes IRS-approved forms of gold and silver, real estate, and even cryptocurrency, alongside traditional investments. For investors with a diversified investment strategy, a self-directed IRA is the answer.
A Self-Directed Gold IRA Offers More Control
Whether you currently hold a traditional IRA, a Roth IRA, a SEP IRA, or a SIMPLE IRA, a self-directed gold IRA gives you more control over your portfolio than most retirement investors realize is possible. You choose your custodian (the IRA trustee). You choose your metals dealer. You choose your IRS-approved depository.
Most retirement accounts severely limit your investment options. A gold IRA is a self-directed account that lets YOU decide what you invest in. Gold IRAs allow you the flexibility to hold a broad range of investments. And given that gold often moves independently and sometimes inversely to paper based assets, the option to invest in gold with retirement funds is priceless over the long haul.
Why Your Physical Gold Investment Is Safe
Per the United States Code, the precious metals permitted inside a retirement account must meet specific purity requirements:
- Gold – 99.5%
- Silver – 99.9%
- Platinum and Palladium – 99.95%
All foreign mint coins, bars, and rounds must be accredited by an approved refiner, assayer, or manufacturer. All items must be in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The most common gold coins held inside retirement portfolios are American Gold Eagles. American Silver Eagles are the most popular silver coins.
Precious Metals IRA Stored at IRS Approved Depository
Gold IRAs require that you store your gold at an approved third-party depository. You cannot keep IRA gold at home, in your safe, or in a bank deposit box you control. Your gold IRA custodian will have a relationship with at least one approved vault.
Each precious metals depository carries sophisticated security features and is fully insured per IRS requirements. Most offer two different storage options.
Commingled Gold IRA Storage
Commingled storage means your precious metal is stored in a section of the vault with the holdings of other clients. If you sell, trade, or take an in-kind distribution from the account, you’ll receive the same type of coins you originally bought, but not the exact same ones.
When the depository receives your precious metals, each item is individually inspected to confirm Brilliant Uncirculated condition. If a coin has a flaw, it gets sent back to the dealer to be replaced. So whether you store your gold commingled or segregated, you’re protected.
Segregated Gold IRA Storage
Segregated storage is typically available only for gold IRAs. It means your specific coins or bars are stored independently of other clients’ holdings, cataloged under your name and account number. If you sell, trade, or take an in-kind distribution, you receive the exact items you originally purchased.
Storage fees for segregated gold IRA storage typically run about $50 more per year than commingled.
Why Investing in a Gold IRA Is Safe in 2026
2026 is shaping up to be one of the more volatile years in recent memory. Ray Dalio has publicly described the period ahead as “very dark times” for the global economy.
The U.S. economy is teetering on the edge of either a major correction or something worse. The national debt is now near $40 trillion, an increase of roughly 50 percent since 2020. Inflation is historically high. And the stock market is trading near record highs as of May 2026.
Include the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, and a China that wants Taiwan — and you have a situation in which physical gold has historically performed well while paper assets may falter.
Historically, traditional gold IRAs have performed well in periods of high inflation, economic uncertainty, and war. So adding a gold IRA to your retirement strategy in 2026 may be one of the more practical ways to diversify.
How to Establish a Gold IRA
There are three simple steps to setting up a gold IRA.
1. Select a gold IRA custodian and depository
To open a gold IRA, call the Certified Gold Exchange at 800-300-0715, and we’ll walk you through the application. Traditional gold IRAs, Roth gold IRAs, and SEP gold IRAs are all available. We can usually get a gold IRA established within 48 hours.
2. Fund a gold IRA
Once your account is set up, you can transfer funds from another custodian, roll over a 401(k) or other qualified retirement plan, or make an annual contribution.
According to the IRS, contribution limits for 2026 are $7,500 or $8,600 if you’re over 50 years of age. To contribute to a gold IRA, you simply send a personal check along with a deposit coupon to your custodian.
3. Purchase gold or other approved precious metals
Once your gold IRA is funded, you’re ready to buy. Once you’ve agreed on which precious metals to acquire, your dealer will help you complete an Investment Authorization form to finalize the purchase. And as mentioned above, your gold must be held at a 3rd party vault, which your dealer will ship it to.
One warning: many gold IRA providers (dealers) will try to push you toward overpriced “exclusive” or “premium” coins. These coins are not premium in any way, and you will frequently end up paying 30 percent or more above what a bullion item would cost. Call CGE at 800-300-0715 before making any purchase, and we’ll make sure you’re getting a fair deal on gold or silver bullion.

Potential Downsides of Holding Gold in an IRA
Gold IRAs are a great fit for many investors but not everyone. Gold IRAs come with some downsides that you should consider.
A gold IRA allows you to own physical metal but you can’t take possession of it. The IRS requires gold IRA metals to be stored at an approved third-party vault. You are not permitted to store IRA gold at home, regardless of what some online marketers may claim.
That said, when you eventually take a withdrawal from a gold IRA, you can choose to take it in physical metal rather than cash. That’s a taxable event for a traditional gold IRA, the same as any other withdrawal. For a Roth gold IRA, if you’re over 59.5 years of age, the distribution is tax-free because it was funded with after-tax dollars.
Transactions take longer than with paper assets. Because you own physical bullion, buying and selling involves actually moving the metal. A gold ETF or mining stock can be sold with the click of a button. Physical gold has to be inspected, transferred, and recorded so transactions aren’t instantaneous like traditional IRAs.
There are setup fees when you open a gold IRA. Self-directed custodians don’t make money managing investments. All of their revenue comes from service fees so you’ll pay an account setup fee that you probably wouldn’t pay with a regular IRA.
There are annual storage fees as well. Typically, storage runs about $100 per year for commingled and about $150 for segregated. If you owned a gold ETF instead, you wouldn’t own any metals, but you also wouldn’t have to pay for storage.
Gold doesn’t pay dividends or interest. Gold does not generate income. Your return depends entirely on gold prices going up. If you’re looking to generate income, gold IRAs aren’t a good option for you.
You can’t contribute gold you already own. Existing precious metals in your possession can’t be deposited into a gold IRA. The metals have to be acquired inside the account.
The Biggest Risk to Opening a Gold IRA: Selecting the Wrong Gold IRA Company
We said it before and we’ll say it again because it’s the single most important thing to take from an honest discussion of gold IRAs.
If you select the wrong precious metals dealer, you can be overcharged by so much that it overwhelms any other variable. We’ve seen the federal and state cases. We’ve reviewed the consent orders. We’ve seen what dealers in Los Angeles and elsewhere have actually charged elderly clients while presenting themselves as friendly gold IRA providers on television and online.
The affiliate-driven “best gold IRA company” lists you see on the front page of Google search results are largely paid for. The dealer who pays the affiliate the most appears in the “best” rankings, and when that dealer eventually gets shut down by a state attorney general or the FTC, the next-highest bidder simply rotates into the top spot. The cycle continues. The retirees keep losing money.

Bottom Line: Gold IRAs Can Definitely Be Safe
A gold IRA can be a priceless addition to a diversified retirement portfolio — especially in an environment of historically high debt, rising inflation, and global instability. The diversification benefit is real. The tax advantages are consistent with traditional individual retirement accounts. And the historical record on gold as a safe haven asset class is well established.
But safety is a function of the decisions you make about who to work with, what to pay, and when to buy. Get those right and a gold IRA can do exactly what it’s supposed to do. Get them wrong and you’ll join the long list of retirees who learned the hard way that an “A+ rated” dealer isn’t the same as an honest one.
To determine if precious metals are right for you and to learn how to open or sell a gold IRA, call CGE at 800-300-0715 to get your questions answered.
