American Eagle Silver Proofs are specimen-minted versions of the extremely popular bullion coin. With the exception of 2009, Proof Silver Eagles have been in continuous mintage since 1986.

Proof Silver Eagles were first struck in San Francisco and bear the “S” mint mark. Beginning in 1993 the Philadelphia Mint (“P” mint mark) took over production, where it remained until 2001. Since then Proof Silver Eagles have been produced by the West Point Mint with the “W” mint mark.

The exquisite rendering of the classic design sets Proof Silver Eagles apart from their bullion counterparts. The dies used to produce them are polished to mirror-like perfection and are sharply engraved to the minutest detail; only the best of the best are selected to press the Proofs.

Planchets for Proof Silver Eagles are similarly formed and selected from .999 fine blanks of American silver that are manually fed to presses to prevent defects from mechanical handling. Multiple strikes ensure each coin accurately reproduces every detail of the design and frequent inspection exposes the slightest variance in the process. Dies that cannot be cleaned to correct a problem are discarded.

The obverse side of the Proof Silver Eagles is an exquisite rendering of Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic design for the half dollar silver coin minted from 1916 to 1947. Liberty, enshrouded in the American flag, is in full stride towards the rising sun, her open right hand extended while clutching laurel and oak branches in her left. The cameo, or frosted, devices appear to float over an unblemished mirrored field.

The heraldic eagle on the reverse was designed by John Mercanti and its rendering on Proof Silver Eagles is no less stunning than that of the obverse.
