President Obama’s recent appearance on Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show” was obviously not the friendly chat that the president was expecting. Comedian Stewart was happy to raise issues concerning recent government incompetence (examples of late being the Veterans Affairs waiting list scandal, the hacking of the Office of Personnel & Management, and the ongoing IRS targeting case). When pressed on the continuing criminal investigation by his own Justice Department into the alleged targeting of tea-party and conservative groups by the IRS, Obama said there was no scandal, it was not his fault and that the real problem was actually underfunding. He even went as far as to say that the issue was the result of “crummy” laws passed by Congress implemented “poorly and stupidly” by IRS employees.
However, the IRS’ internal auditor has categorically concluded that conservative and tea-party groups were specifically targeted by the agency, hence the Justice Department’s criminal investigation. Obama appeared oblivious to this point, saying there was not a “smidgen of corruption” within the IRS itself. On his point regarding underfunding, he added that “they [the IRS] cannot go after these folk who are deliberately avoiding tax payments.”
