What Are The Types of NGC Certified Gold Coins?

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation has certified and authenticated over 20 million coins

from around the world and is the only major company providing the service for ancient coins

(those in circulation prior to AD 500).

NGC grades the following basic types of US gold coins, which have consistently proven to have

superior investment potential:

• Gold Dollars (1849-1889)

• Quarter Eagles ($2.50)

Early Quarter Eagle (1796-1834)

Classic Head Quarter Eagle (1834-1839)

Liberty Head Quarter Eagle (1840-1907)

Indian Head Quarter Eagle (1908-1929)

• Half Eagles ($5)

Capped Bust Half Eagle (1807-1834)

Four Dollar Stella (1879-1880)

NGC gold coins are graded on the 70-point Sheldon scale. The highest grade (70) is assigned to

only those gold coins having no detectable post-production markings when magnified five times.

MS, or Mint State, gold coins are uncirculated and fall between 60 and 70 on the scale. MS grade

coins are most commonly considered to be of investment grade.

Most gold coins were struck in numerous varieties. NGC defines a variety as “a coin that differs

from its basic design type in some distinctive way and is thus differentiated by collectors.”

Due to their lengthy mintages, Liberty Head gold coins have the greatest number of varieties:

148, 217, 186, and 150 for MS Quarter Eagles, Half Eagles, Eagles, and Double Eagles

respectively. St. Gaudens Double Eagles, which are generally regarded as the premier gold coin

investment, have 52 MS variations.

The vast array of available types and varieties of NGC gold coins may seem overwhelming, but

a call to the gold coin experts at the Certified Gold Exchange is all you need to make the best

possible selection for your particular investment needs.
