More than 6,000 store locations across the U.S. will be permanently shut down in the immediate future as retailers begin their preparations for a forthcoming economic downturn. As discretionary consumer spending continues to decline, major retailers, such as JCPenney, Abercrombie & Fitch, Office Depot and Macy’s, are taking action now, with under-performing stores top of their list.
The U.S. currently has more retail space per person than any other nation in the world. However, the appearance of our malls and shopping districts will soon be very different, complete with a profusion of “retail space available” signs.
