Federal government has now invested over $3.5 million of taxpayers’ money into a study to find out why 75% of lesbians are clinically obese. In receipt of grants given by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the 5 year study, entitled “Sexual Orientation and Obesity”, is looking for the reason as to why levels of lesbian obesity are higher than with heterosexual women (currently around 50%). It recently received a further $658,485 from the NIH, who, having doubled yearly funding since 2013, has publicly said the research is of “high public health significance.”
The “Sexual Orientation and Obesity” study is also exploring why gay men are less likely to be obese than their heterosexual counterparts. In fact, they have found, during the ongoing study, that gay men have a “greater desire for toned muscles,” somewhat unsurprisingly.
