2013 American Eagle Coin Sales Robust in First Quarter
Posted by Brian Ford on April 05, 2013
First quarter sales levels of U.S. Mint bullion coins are strong for the American Gold Eagles and record-breaking for American Silver Eagles.
Market movements of the gold and silver prices have presented an opportunity for investors to enter gold and silver markets at relatively low price points, perhaps fueling the drive to precious metals as a safe haven investment.
March sales of American Eagle bullion coins were slightly down from the previous month’s record-breaking levels, a continuation of the trend from January 2013 to February. Seasonally, that movement is to be expected as January is typically a very strong time for coin sales with newly dated coins available at the U.S. Mint.
Sales indicate that year over year numbers are up for the month of March, modestly for American Gold Eagle Coins with sales up from 62,000 to 62,500 ounces and sharply for the American Silver Eagle Coin with sales up from 2,542,000 to 3,356,500 ounces.
The level of sales for American Silver Eagle Coins is the 14th highest monthly ranking in March 2013 from the coin’s 27-year history. With 3,356,500 ounces sold, sales are 32 percent higher than the 2,542,000 ounces that sold to authorized distributors in March 2012.
First quarter sales at the U.S. Mint are on a streak with sales of American Eagle Silver Coins reaching 14,223,000 ounces, the first time in the Silver Eagle’s history that sales reached so high so early in the year. Currently, sales through April have breached the 15,000,000 troy ounce level, yet another record that has been broken.
In 2012, the U.S. Mint did not take its 14 millionth order for the American Silver Eagle until May 25th. Currently, the Silver Eagle’s annual sales record was achieved in 2011 with 39,868,500 ounces sold at the U.S. Mint. The spectacular sales level of 12,429,000 troy ounces of silver was achieved that same year, a level that is nearly 1.8 million troy ounces less than the current level of sales of American Silver Eagles at the U.S. Mint.
Additionally, America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins have totaled 19,800 coins in the month of March, a 38.1 percent surge from the February 2013 sales of 14,340 coins, again an indication of investor demand for physical silver bullion in today’s market.
